Hello...I was looking over the past postings in this section about breeding. I wanted to sum up what I believe you were saying about the Pearl cock to apply it to a clutch I have. So here goes. I have a Normal Gray/pd/prl/cin cock. Bred him to a visually Normal Gray hen(very slight ticking on neck so pd is behind her too, right?). It looks to me like we have one baby that is for sure a Pearl. Does that make the pearl baby a hen? It may even be Pearl pied, the pin feathers are just starting to open so hard for me to tell. In the clutch, I also have a gray, and a possible pied tho its pin feathers aren't in yet all the way, just a beautiful yellow stubby pinfeather crest and some gray pins on the wings... Thanks for your help Jean

Yes, the hen that has the slight ticking has pied in her genetics. As for the pearl baby it is a hen as pearl cocks will only produce pearl hens.

ahh...good to know...now, because Mom bird is visibly carrying a slight pied split, and Daddy is clearly split pied, will I have to DNA the pied 3rd baby as well as the gray to determine sex? Thank you, I just wish I could get my brain to absorb the "rules" but they just cannot seem to grasp it! Frustrating for me... Jean

Howdy...I have asked on other sites in the past and been given the calculator for calculating the percentages but my system won't run it for some annoying reason... So I will bug you all again... I have a norm gray/pd/prl/cn who was bred to a Norm gray hen with the ticking on the neck indicating pd present...they produced what looks like a pearl, a cinn, and what we think will be a pied. Not all the pins are open yet(I know I am rushing it but I just gotta know LOL)...would that make the pearl and cinnamon babies hens and the pied an unknown unless dna'd??? Thanks for your patience Jean

Yes, Jean, you are right on the mark! It is fun to understand genetics, and see what you get. I just got my first Lutino Pastelface hen...she hatched last night and that is what she has to be and how nice to know and not have to send in DNA. Very exciting. Much of the reason I decided to get back into birds, and cockatiels in particular, is the genetics...I just love it.
Good luck, you seem to have a terrific grasp of SL and recessive traits.
