Hey everyone! I recently just joined the site. I have several questions. As I stated in my last post I recently acquired two cockatiels. About 3 weeks ago my female laid 2 eggs, the next day she laid 1, a week later she laid 2, and then sometime this week she laid 2, and today she laid 1! It's crazy, I have NOT been removing any of her eggs, and the only time I mess with them is when I candle lite the eggs to check if they are fertile. I've done that about 5x in the last 3 weeks. Before I left for a week vacation last week one egg was showing very good veins and I could see the heart beating and little embryo. Today I looked at the eggs and it looked like there is still only one egg that has any veins. I am so confused. Am I hurting the eggs when I am looking at them? Am I making the parents neglect them? Even after I look at the eggs the parents still continue to nest on them. All the other eggs from 3 weeks ago look mainly white, but have a yellow embryo inside them. This is my first time breeding and dealing with the actual incubation process and I'm afraid I killed my babies? Any suggestions are welcome!!

Don't worry you didn't kill the babies. I'm afraid I can't give you much advice other then to ask on the NCS facebook group. There are professional breeders there who will be able to offer suggestions.

First of all welcome aboard, its very nice to meet you. Second of all, from what you describe it sounds like you have one fertile egg and the rest are duds. This is nothing you did wrong, it is just the way it goes sometimes. So long as you are not disrupting your pair and you are not bothering them repeatedly, they are very unlikely to neglect their family. The parents should care for the baby on their own, but if you run into trouble try to find someone who is able to help you hand feeding. It is something better taught in person than watched on film so that you can ask questions and make sure your doing it right. It is a new and fascinating learning every day weather you have bred for 30 years or 3 days. Make notes, keep a journal and ask questions, this is what we are here for. Blessings and good luck, ~Ruth~

Hello, I'm new to this site too but i agree with everyone. I have been breeding for a long time and usually when a cockatiel lays her eggs inconsistently like yours did, you're going to have infertile eggs. Once they mate the norm is they will lay every 24 to 48 hrs but not start sitting until the 2 or 3 egg is hatched so they all hatch withing a day or two of each other. This is a good time for her to learn how to breed and even if she starts with one baby it will be good practice for her. Generally after the tiels are done laying I wait about a week and then candle them once and this is just for a general idea of what to expect... after that you should leave them alone and wait for them to hatch. Within 21 days you should have some babies.. anything over 4 babies for an inexperienced tiel is too much and one or two may die.. look up YOUTube videos and read what you can on hand-feeding, you may have to eventually to help a baby in the future... Good Luck! You can always go to Mariah's Aviary.com to ask me anything...

Are you trying to breed her? Is there a nest made for her?
