Hi, I'm new here. Does anyone know how far a cockatiel would fly looking for food or a home if lost. Thank you, Jo

The wild Cockatiels can fly up to several miles per day. The domestic ones will not last long if they are lost. If they can they will try to find a human to get food. There have been cases of lost Cockatiels found, but they are rare.

Not sure which country you are in Marie and Chirpy - but we are currently "homing" and looking for the owners of 4 lost cockatiels which have been found within the 6 weeks and brought to us! The trouble is finding the owners, because they can travel an awfully long way. 50 km over a few weeks is not unusual - the thing is that they rarely keep flying in the same direction and will zig and zag all over the place to avoid hazards and look for a food source. If attacked by predators, they need to be good flyers (i.e. not clipped) in order to survive. Jo - If you are looking for a lost bird - cast your yet wide. Immediate area for first few days, then wider and wider concentric circles. Also, if you live in a decent climate with a food source they can access, they can last for literally months. Finding a lost bird after 3 months is not unheard of.
