I have decided, after my baby , an 11 year old old english mastiff, went to doggie heaven two years ago, now is the time to introduce a new pet for my daughter and home. After doing a lot of research, cockatiels seem to be one of the best birds for new bird owners with children. She's almost 8. The problem I'm having is, like my dog, I only want to purchase a bird from a reputable breeder. I live in the hudson valley area. Does anyone have any idea how to find breeders? I've been searching google but haven't really found breeder pages like I have for mastiffs. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I live in the Hudson Valley area too. What county do you live in? Have you tried looking on craigslist and ebay classifieds?
By the way Cockatiels produce a fine powdery substance to keep their feathers. This can cause problems for adults and kids with respiratory issues. Also depending on how well their owners take care of them, they can can live 15 to 20 years and in some cases more then 20 years.

I live in orange county. I was afraid of ebay or craiglist because I am adamant about getting animals from breeding mills. I would like a bird from a reputable breeder who has strict rules about "adoption". I also would like a breeder who hand feeds their birds and raises them in a socialized environment with plenty of room to roam; treating them like the family member they are. I have found one breeder in maine whom I have contacted but I was hoping to find someone of similar quality

Well I don't know of any Cockatiel breeders in Orange County. There is a bird store in Ulster County called The Bird House and they do breed Cockatiels. The address is 249 Glasco Turnpike Saugerties New York. The phone number is 845-246-6302. There are also two other bird stores. One is located in Dutchess County and it is called the Bird Cage Pet Shop. The address is 870 Rt.9G Hyde Park New York. The phone number is 845-229-2426. The second one is located in Westchester and it is called Parrot Jungle. The address is 365 Central Avenue, Scarsdale, New York 10583. The phone 914-723-5556.
A friend of mine bought her Cockatiel from Parrot Jungle. The bird is well socialized and tame. All three stores breed and tame the birds they sell.
I do know of a breeder in Rochester New York who raises Cockatiels in her own home and breeds them for petstores as well as sell them from her own home. Would you like to have her contact information and address as well?

My first thought would be to contact the Hudson Valley bird club www.hvcbirdsociety.freeservers.com/ and see if they have any suggestions that might give you some leads. I would NOT suggest trying "want adds" like Craigslist or EBay, because you may run into trouble that way. I would also check with your local Audubon Society, animal control or rescue services or even the local rangers service. They may not be able to tell you where you can and should go, but they certainly would know where not to send you. You could also look on the NCS website for breeders and registered aviary's close to you. www.cockatiels.org/main/membership-information/aviaries/ Also www.cockatiels.org/main/membership-information/membership-contact-info/state-coordinators-2/ is the link for the list of positions and state coordinators are listed here as well. Many of these folks would be very happy to help you find a breeder near you. I wish you the best in your search, ~Ruth~

I tried asking the President of the Hudson Valley Bird club. He did not know of any Cockatiel breeders.
