Hi, we have a 3 yr old male named Beeker.. For the first 3 yrs Beeker learned alot, flying without running into walls, whistling, talking and playing with the girls "2 parakeets Mazy and Daisey. Beeker just went through a serious molt. It took around 3 weeks and during that time he just quit whistling and talking. He does scratch once and awhile. Took him to the vet and everything is fine. Also he weights 30.5 grams{3 oz}.. I talk and whistle to him all the time. I wonder, is this puberty or a just a stage? Any thoughts would be appreciated... Thanks everyone Mike

Beeker was probably feeling cranky from the molt and that's why he stopped whistling and talking.

Yeah Graystar is a cranky bird also she is molting and if i was you try and get your cockatiel to gain some more weight unless its a small bird. Thats a low weight a good weight is at least 60 grams. I know they loose weight during molting and during winter give them more seeds and protein cause they will sometimes loose weight depending on how warm or cold your house is! You can give hard boiled eggs for protein they love em and some spray millet will make him feel better I hope i didnt sound mean i am just trying to help

Graystar is a beautiful name, Beeker is a small teil at 3yrs, the young birds in the petshop look bigger than him. He does alot of cruising around the house with the girls. Mazie and Daisey, "parakeets". Mazy even says "Peekaboo" sometimes. Beeker finally whistled and talked for 10mins yesterday for the first time in a 2 months. I had tears. It was such a relief to know that he wasn't hiding an illness.. I did sart giving him alittle Sunshine Factor every other day, and 4 days later and probly molt end, he's good to go. I appreciate everyones imput. It's such a relief that there are alot of caring people out there. Please contact me if anyone needs anything or just wants to share.. Bless All. Mike

Hello all, well I am glad to report that Beeker and I had our first whistling and talking duet in 2.5 months. He is bad to "Prenning" my wiskers and sitting in kitchen alone and singing to classic rock on the direct tv in the after noon. I sneek into the livingroom where he cant see or hear me, and sit and listen to him... It brings tears to my eyes. He's at 3.1 ounces, which I think is a good weight for him. He fly's around and doesn't pant much when he lands. It's great to have somewhere to go and talk to freinds here.. Mazy and Daisey are doing good also. They chase him out of his cage, then re-arrange his toys. Great fun to watch..

That's great.
When weighing birds, they should be weighed in grams not ounces. That is how many parrot owners and all bird's vets weight them.
