Hi, I have a question about a mourning cockatiel that I have, his cage buddy died just yesterday... My question is this, my dad owns a couple of other cockatiel's but his are outside the house in a big cage and were never raised inside the house. So now that my male cockatiel is alone and in mourning I was thinking of maybe introducing him to one of the others one on one for possible companionship.I was also thinking of maybe moving him outside and putting him in the same cage with the others also. But one of my big gripes is that he's used to being in here with us in the house in his cage and not outside for very long.So my fear is that he may not take to it well being outside with the others. So any suggestions on how I can go about this dilemma, any comments would help thanks...

I have no experience moving a Cockatiel from inside the house with human interaction to outside the house with other Cockatiels and little interaction. National Cockatiel Society has a facebook page. If you have a facebook account, try posting the question there.

Well thats a hard one if your dads cockatiels are bonded then its best not to seperate them or they will start mourning! Your best bet is bring both tiels in and set the cage next to your lonely one so they all start bonding to each other through the cages then slowly introduce one or both to the lonely one and see what happens they can all love each other as a group or 2 can pick on the other it just depends on the indiviagial cockatiel! Is the lonely cockatiel friendly if so try bonding to it, talk softly, offer treats and that may help! Sorry for your loss

I think it depends on what you want your relationship with the mourning cockatiel to be. If you want to create a stronger bond with him this would be the perfect chance. If you don't have a lot of time for one on one and aren't really looking for taming him then I'm sure he would benefit from joining the outdoor flight. In my experience, cockatiels are very hardy and good at adapting, so unless there are health concerns I wouldn't worry too much about relocating him to the outdoor cage with the others. I wish you the best.

That's always sad.. But cockatiels adapt quickly, they are social birds and were they the same sex but bonded or a mating pair? If they were the same sex then just get another adult tiel. If they were a bonded mating pair, give him or her a couple of months to mourn and then introduce another tiel to him or her.. they will eventually forget about the other tiel. I've had to do this twice.. Good Luck!
