I bought a Cockatiel from a breeder. I didn't get to meet the breeder personally. My grandmother's, neighbor's, Mother, breeds parrots. She didn't have any Cockatiels at that time but said she could get us one from a show she was going to. So we go to her house and pick it up and was curious about the band on his foot, as I have never owned a bird before and from the information I gathered from the internet, my bird's band says he's 15 years old unless I am reading it wrong. I asked for a young bird and she told us when we picked it up that is was a young bird. She said the breeder was asking 100 + dollars for the bird but was able to talk him down to 50.00. The band reads NCS-08K-13-96 and the "96" is written sideways instead of across like the other numbers and letters. Can someone please tell me if my bird is indeed 15 years old please? I have only had the bird for a week but I love him already so I will not be giving him back or anything like that but I will be very upset to know that the bird I have come to love doesn't have many years left to live Please, someone help me out with this. Thank you April

The 96 may not be the year the Cockatiel was hatched. Contrary to information found on the internet not all breeders put the hatch date on leg bands. In other words the 96 could mean the tiel was the 96th Cockatiel hatched at the breeders facility. For example when I tried to decipher the leg band on my Cockatiel, I realized the number on the leg band is not the hatch date. After finding the guy who breed her he used the number to look up her file and gave me Chirpy's hatch date.
I sent a message to the NCS leg band secretary with a link to this post. So your question will be answered.

If it is an NCS band, that's easy, the numbers mean the following;
NCS is National Cockatiel Society
08K is the breeders code
13 is for the number in the clutch or breeding order that was banded
96 the sideways number is the year it was born.
That's the way it has always been done in the NCS. Blessings Ruth NCS state Coordinator for Maine
