I have had my cockatiel, Kiwi, for approximately six years (however I don't know the age of Kiwi when I got him). About two years ago, I had to leave home for college and left Kiwi with my mom. But, she has told me that I must take him to my apartment or find a new home for him because of Kiwi's incessant and piercing screams. I would love to keep my bird with me in my apartment, but I need to cure some of the screaming problems or my neighbors will likely burn down the place!
I understand that a bad habit has been formed. When Kiwi would scream at my mom's house, my mom would go try to comfort and coax him to stop instead of ignoring the screaming. Now, I must ignore Kiwi when he screams and reward him when he is quiet or singing. My question is, how long after Kiwi stops screaming do I wait to reward him? Also, is there ANYTHING else I can do to see results?
Thanks so much!!!!

When Kiwi stops screaming reward him immediately. Do this for a while and later on wait a few minutes to give him a reward. Then gradually increase the wait time and eventually he'll stop screaming.
