OK OK I know another newbie, going to change the world and make Big money selling birds...NO Not really but one can only hope right!
I have been rising birds for sometime now mostly chickens and turkeys LOL but a few years ago I was given four Cockatiels after caring for them for about 9 months! one female Latino "Sophie"and three males two pied "spike" and "Hannibal" and one white face "Buster" they had been mistreated and had ended up in a pretty bad state when we all first met at the dog pond!
Yep that's right at the dog pond they were in a big cage in one of the kennels all huddled together in the far corner of the cage! ya it was bad... the dogs all barking... the Kennel was dark and it all smelled pretty bad too!
well I had been walking dogs there on an off for some time! I am a dog lover too by the way! I seen these birds there and right away we moved them to the front office...they did great there, everyone started paying attention to them and they became our sidekick Buddies all doing pretty well too! well the place had to close down and I ended up with the birds which was great we had worked through a lot of problems and made a lot of progress! the guy told me when he give them up that "they're your birds anyway"
I moved the whole lot in to our living room ya even my dog Jack, a large husky, thinks the birds belong to him! I seen another Bird one day in a cage by herself, I always think that's sad to see when I know how much they enjoy having other birds in the cage with them, the owner Lori, said that the bird had flew into her mother house one day and she just kept it after no one responded to here lost and found ad...well Mom got sick had to move and Lori had ended up with the bird and the cage! she said "that Bird lays eggs all the time I just toss them out"...well I told her about my guys and that we should get her together with one of them even offered to give her a bird if she wanted... I was feeding her a cookie during this whole conversation and Lori said she had never seen her so friendly Before! about two months later Lori gave me the bird and sold the cage "Cookie" is a speckled Cinnamon Pied and she took right off to "Hannibal" my one eye Pied... ya he had an eye poked out at some point before I got him! well those to courted for about 2 weeks and that was about the time I found an egg in the feed dish! so I set up a cardboard nest box and set the egg in there attached it to another cage I put Cookie in there Hannibal few right in! Cookie laid two more eggs Only one hatched and we were all parents after that!
That's were this whole thing took a turn! since they got together over a year ago they have had a clutch going of up 8 eggs and as little as 2 ever since! we have had 4 off spring so far Oreo..Coco...and the twins, Ginger and Snap (named after cookies)
I lost Sophie in a cage accident about a year ago she some how broke her neck after getting her head stuck between the bars in the bottom of the cage...that was a tough thing to go through worse then losing family I think sometimes, we were pretty close!
Well I bought a couple of females (Hens) from an on line ad and met Marcia she has been couching me with the off spring from Cookie! so far Parent raised but planning at some point to start Hand feeding! we are at the ten bird point and I thought it was time to put our little adventure on the map and join the NSC...get everyone banded and start keeping track of the whole lot which I refer to as "The Cornbread Bunch"
I am hoping to not only network with you all, grow in our community but help promote the NCS here in Minnesota!
I understand it's a bit of a frontier here! so here is a good place to start WESTWIND AVIARY looking forward to meeting you all either here, on face book, or maybe at a convention, look for our Booth... I am still planning?
