Since I raise chickens, I have built my own candler. Everyone that has eggs wants to see what is inside them. Are they fertile? How are they growing? Unless you know what you are doing, it is best to let Mother Nature take care of them. But, if you must check them out, it is easy to make a candler vs buying one. You can use a small cardboard box and a LED flash light. Cut a hole in the box to set the egg on and tape the flash light on the bottom of the box. There you have it and you save $75 or more. What you will be looking for is the air sac and veining the first ten days. After that you can see the chick starting to develop. About the eighteenth day you will see movement. I try not to touch the eggs unless I think there is a problem. Mama may not want to be moved around while setting and she may leave the nest. When I am using an incubator, I only candle the eggs twice, the day I put them in to check for cracked eggs and then on day 18 when I stop turning them. For those that would like a lot more information on this subject, go to backyardchickens.com They have photos of the full 21 day hatching period photographed. This is on chickens, but tiel eggs are just smaller.

the best egg people are chicken people. Great info! Would you like to write an article on candling for the Society? Leslie

It would be much easier for everyone to use the Backyard Chicken site or any of the college sites, such as the one at U C Davis. Backyard Chickens in the learning center will show you how to make a candler and has pictures and videos of eggs being candled from day one right though day 21 ( hatch day). I do not have the equipment to take these photos. I use a candler that is very bright for I raise dark egg layers, Black French Marans. Their eggs are about the color of a chocolate bar and thick. If not careful, I could burn the baby chick, one reason I only check the eggs twice, the other being, I let Mother Nature do her thing.

I agree! I love that website! I have learned so much about egg management.
