Hi, I have a pair of tiels that have laid 6 eggs. They just laid the last egg this morning. They sit on the eggs all day but it appears that they are not sitting on them at night. This is there 1st clutch. I'm hoping now that they have 6 eggs they will sit on the 24/7. If they do not sit on them at night, will the eggs hatch? Thanks

If this is there first time as parents they will not get it right. The nesting instinct will kick in when they lay their second clutch. Usually the pair will incubate the eggs in shifts, one parent incubates during the day and the other incubates during the night. Make sure they have a proper nest to incubate the eggs in. If the eggs get chilled while parents are not incubating them, they will not hatch. Try candling them to see if there are live babies. If the babies are alive you might have to put them in an incubator.

You won't see anything in the egg for at least 7 days, then just veining. You will be able to see the sir sac getting larger, but even that doesn't mean anything until the last week of incubation. You can candle the eggs with a good led flashlight in a dark room.

Since this is their first clutch, chances are that they will not get it right. This doesn't mean you should give up just yet. I have a pair who won't sit regularly until they have everything laid. About 24 hours after they laid their final egg, then they decide they need to settle down and be parents. I have pretty good luck just waiting it out to see what happens. Give them time to fumble through the process and try to hatch these eggs. They may have a few hatch or none may hatch, but the next time they go to nest, chances are you will have a pretty good set of parents. You should not pull the eggs after just a couple days. They will need time to mature some more if they didn't do this round right - give them several months after you are sure that this clutch is not going to hatch - before you try to have them go to nest again.

Thanks for your replies. After laying 6 eggs they finally started incubating them. The male sits on them during the day and the female sits on them at night. It's been 18 days since the last egg was laid so if any eggs are viable, they should hatch soon.
