My cockatiel chick was 3 days old when the parents abandoned the nest. They took off the tip of his/her top beak and a small area on the left bottom beak (the bottom is barely noticeable). She's doing well and has just started flying, but can't seem to grip anything or take the husks of seed (she's only had seed a few days). Will the tip of her beak grow? I don't want to lose her as she's a lovely little thing! I've handraised before, but not with this circumstance. Attachments:

The beak will grow, but will it grow out correctly. The beaks of birds are constantly growing much like a finger nail. If it didn't they would wear down in no time. Since I am new to tiels, I have to use my knowledge of chickens. I have had many deformed beaks on chickens. They need special diets and trimming. In my opinion your baby will give you many years of joy.

The beak will grow back, but in the mean while you will have to put the baby on special diet. Talk to your vet and ask them about what food should you give her until her beak has grown back.

Thank you both so much - I've been worried sick about the poor little thing! I will do as suggested and contact our vet about a diet (she's still on three feeds a day at the moment). What a relief!

I have not been monitoring here as much as I should and just took a look at this picture and read all the comments. The beak at this age will grow back but you really need to talk to the vet as the baby may need a prosthesis for the beak to grow back properly. I speak from experience on this as we had 2 last year with a similar type problem. Their upper beaks had curled under and were not growing properly, part of the upper beak had to be removed and a prosthesis made and put inplace for the upper beak to grow back properly. This is something you will need to discuss with an avian vet. If you need more information this let me know.
