One of my birds, a rescued grey male, has a feather problem. New feathers grow and almost reach maturity, and will then either drop off, or he chews them off. Tip of feather is encased in tough myelin and sometimes is bloody. He has actually bled a little bit. He almost grew a tail, but the long feathers all fell out when they got long. Any ideas?

The feather picking could be as a result of poor nutrition. It could also be a habit it has picked up. It could also be from disease so it would be best to have him seen by an avian vet. Giardia is quite common in cockatiels. It is a protozoa that causes extreme itching of the skin and then they start to preen and themselves and overpreen. Spraying the bird will help to condition the feathers. It is nornal for new feathers to be encased in a sheath (plastic-like coating). This protects the bloodfeather. You can also try some Necton Bio in his water. This is a vitamin that enhances feather growth. Jan
