Hi,
I have had birds: budgies, a lovebird, and cockatiels since 1986 but presently have none. I would like to find an affectionate cockatiel (would consider other medium sized birds) to adopt in the North Carolina Triangle (Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill) area. Please let me know if you can help me find a new feathered companion.
Thanks, Laurel

You can join the Raleigh Durham Caged Bird Society. www.rdcbs.orgI am in the Raleigh, NC area. I have some older birds who would do well in an adopted home if you are interested. Private message me if you want. Leslie

Hi Leslie,
I attempted to send you a private message; wasn't quite sure how to do that so I hope it reaches you.
Thanks for responding, Laurel

I went to the Flying Colors Bird Sanctuary in Haw River www.flyingcolorsbirds.org/index.htmllast weekend and adopted a 7 year old male cockatiel named Jerry. I spent over 2 hours with him there and he seemed quite friendly. He has allowed me to rub his head and sings very pretty but he doesn't respond to the "step up" command and seems quite finger shy (though he doesn't mind perching on my shoulder or a leg if I am lying down on the couch) and has bit me several times though I've been very kind to him. I have never had a bird that bites and hope that I can convince him to outgrow this bad behaviour, if not I'll have to take him back to the bird sanctuary. Any suggestions ?

First you must figure out what might be causing him to bite (i.e. a change in the environment ). If you are trying to pick him up and he is not used to being handled, then that would cause him to bite. You have to work with him and gain his trust in order to stop the biting.
