For the first time in months I have no band aids on my fingers. The female would let me handle her right from the start, but the male would draw blood whenever I came to close. Each time I would handle them, she would get a treat while being held. I guess he wanted one of the treats more then my finger. Will see if he has learned his lesson or if it was a one week end thing. They both greet me whenever I come into the room, which is a good sign I am told.

Sounds like the male is becoming more tamed.

The greeting is for the treats they know they will get. I have to thank my sister for the taming of the male. She is like the bird whisperer. Even some of my roosters were put at easy by her. Then I do try to spend of couple of hours per day with them.

I'm start handling Chirpy without gloves. I've been handling her with gloves for a year now and she no longer panics and run away when I take her out of the cage with them on. Yeah I know she will try to bite me and already bite me today.

Never thought to wear gloves. Just let him bite and draw blood. I knew I couldn't pull my hand away fast or I would scare him. After just the few months I have had them he has let me play with him. The female is a true female, she wants all the attention. Now when I take the male out she has a fit, screams and goes crazy until she is out too. I am lucky these 2 were handled some before I found them. I could handle the female in no time and she knows how to get her way. Don't let the feed or water get below half full. They both carry on. Chirpy sounds like he will be begging for pets in no time.

At first she used to scream and run away. She no longer screams nor runs away when I put the gloves on, though she still does not like to be handled. Now I'm moving on to handling her without gloves. I picked her up today to put her back in the cage and she bit me. I picked her up again to put her in the carrier while I clean the cage. She didn't bite me. We'll see what happens tomorrow.

I spoke to soon, but no fault of the bird. I had the male out sitting on my chest as usual this morning, only to have my 23 month old grand daughter run over to pet him. As her hand can in he try to get away. When he did, I had to hold him tighter, which he doesn't like. Got me on both hands before I could get him back in the cage. When the grand daughter takes her nap I will let him out again. Darn my hands were just all healed up.

In regards to children, Cockatiels do not react well to the fast movements and the energetic voices of toddlers or young children. Also all interactions between children and Cockatiels must be monitored.

You are right Marie. My birds are very used to the kids running around and playing but its all they have ever know. Cockatiels don't like new things. I remember I came home with short hair once and they were just beside themselves!

I remember I came home with short hair once and they were just beside themselves! When I bought Chirpy her first playgym it took several months to get her to step up to it. Now I am working on getting her to play with the new toys attached to the basket I bought for her.

While she took her nap, I bought him out again. No biting, but he was very alert. He does like his out time now. I just haven't had them both out at the same time yet. What noise makers when the other is out. They seem to tease each other when they are out, the one on the outside says, look at me, I am the favorite.
