Hello all. My name is Michelle and I have been breeding cockatiels on and off for the past 10 years. I also do rescue and have a "rare" bald african grey named Tumba(for those of you who aren't familiar with that breed of parrot, it is often found in very bleak environments where sunflower seed and peanuts are their only diet and toys do not exist - tongue-in-cheek). I just moved from NY to TX where my husband and I will now settle for good instead of living as military gypsies (he's retiring from a 20 year military career).
I currently have 5 pairs of 'tiels and two babies. I have Ollie and Buttercup, Cinnamon and Taylor, Lucy and Dezi, Dusty and Padrick, Luna and Artemis and the babies are Cricket (one of 4 babies from Ollie and Buttercup) and Toddy who is a rescue.
Toddy is one week older than Cricket and was an emergency rescue. The "breeder" sold him as a weaned baby to someone who knew nothing at all about cockatiels. Toddy was not only NOT weaned, he was only 5 weeks old. He was almost dead when the owner found me through friends of friends and asked me to help. Ultimately, the owner was so upset, she gave me Toddy to keep. After a week of "touch and go" and tube feeding, Toddy pulled through and began to take formula like a normal baby. He was put on the same feeding schedule as my other babies and finally weaned at 10 weeks. Toddy and Cricket bonded and became the best of friends. Toddy and Cricket are now both trained to wear a flight suit and are my snugglers. They love to be held and cuddled and have never met a stranger. I plan to start to use them as rescue ambassadors and go to schools to talk about responsible parrot ownership. Cricket is a normal grey split to pied and Toddy is a cinnamon pearl.
In all the years I have been doing breeding and rescuework, I have never tackled showing. It is my hope that now that we are settled, I will have the opportunity to try my hand at it. I am very fond of pieds and especially cinnamon pieds.
Cheers!
Michelle
