I had my original cockatiels for 2 years and the older one passed away, the younger tiel(Pebbles) was supposed to be 5years when I got him so 5+2=7. He should be 7 years but they were rescues so I don't know how reliable that info is. Pebbles had been Screaming and getting nastier and nastier(he never was that friendly to begin with). I decided to get more tiels for him to talk to since he was better during the day when the outside birds were out but was horrible during the night and was so desperate for someone to talk to that he was talking to the Guinea Pig. I found a really nice looking pair of White Faced pieds for a reasonable price from a private home that where 2 years old. While trying to determine who was the female, I determined that the one I think is the female is also a pearl. This led me to looking at my Pebbles coloring, reasonably sure he is a pied of some sort. I never really bothered much with coloring or tameness since I just like to watch my birds and don't need them to be tame and naming the color won't change it. I then remembered his leg band. When I read it it said '14M NCS 01'. I am now trying to determine if the last number is his age or an identification number. On the bright side even living in separate cage Pebbles seems much happier and doesn't scream anymore, just chatters at the other tiels across the room.

NCS are the initials for National Cockatiel Society. The reason why Pebbles was screaming is because he was looking for attention ( Cockatiels are flock birds and require a lot of attention ). The reason why he is nasty is because he is not tamed. If you tried putting them all in one cage which the last paragraph seems to suggest, then that is probably why Pebbles started screaming again because in his mind the new tiels were invading his territory.

If you tried putting them all in one cage which the last paragraph seems to suggest, then that is probably why Pebbles started screaming again because in his mind the new tiels were invading his territory. If you would have read carefully, I never said anything about having put them in the same cage, he was screaming and getting meaner AFTER the other cockatiel died BEFORE I got the new tiels. At that point he was the ONLY bird I had at my house ( I also have 12 parakeets and 5 finches but they live 3 blocks away at my Mom's house) and he most certainly did not want attention from me, he wanted attention from other birds. He would start chattering and when no other bird answered it would escalate to screaming. I could see he was upset but me giving him attention only upset him further. He was a rescue that was not tame when I got him at over 5 years old, he was barely handled for the first 5 years from what I understand. For the first 2 years I had him he tolerated me but after the other tiel died he would not let me near him, he started coming at me mouth open when I tried to do anything in the cage. He has NEVER been in the cage with the new tiels, but now that he can see them and talk to them he has CALMED down and now only chatters WITHOUT screaming. Sometimes he still talks to the guinea pig but at least its quieter. I know he is not tame and I don't really care if I can handle him, I am happy watching them while I am in the Rodent room caring for my other exotics, many of which are rescues like him that have their own special issues. I knew NCS stood for the National Cockatiel Society that's why I came here looking to figure out what the last number meant, alot of times with parakeets it is the birth year but sometimes it can just be an identification number.

The band should have 1 more number on it. (ncs 1a 15 99) The 1a is the breeder number, 15 is the chick number and the 99 is the year number. So you were right thinking the last number was the year.

Hi all! you can send an email to membership@cockatiels.org with the legband code (14M) to see who bred the bird. All NCS bands are traceable.
