Hello all! me and my birdie Louie are after some advice! Louie is now around about 18years old and has grown a bit anti social because i went to uni for a few years and couldnt have him with me and he really didnt like my mum too much! but in general he is happy in his cage but not out of it (working hard on that..but hes being stubborn!) and I have never really had any health issues with him until now. A few days ago he developed a lump on the top of one of his feet. I spoke to the vets as soon as i saw it and they said that they wouldn't want me to take him in as hes so old that the stress of it all could kill him and that if he is eating, pooping and walking fine to "leave him too it" . I have spoken to other local vets and they are all saying that its not worth the stress on him! I dont know what to do! I have taken him in before to have his claws trimmed and it was stressful for everyone involved! so do i risk taking him in or not? He is using his foot fine and is climbing about and using it as normal but it looks sore and I am so so worried! sorry my first post is me asking questions!

Most animals, including humans, might have a little lumps here and there that are not significant and do not represent a health risk Cockatiels can have abscesses. An abscess is a collection of pus caused by a bacterial or fungus infection and is potentially dangerous. Veterinarian attention is required or the infection can spread to the rest of the body. Your vet will probably drain the abscess and put your cockatiel on special antibiotics. Your vet will also give instructions on how to care for your cockatiel's abscess while at home. A lump can also be a tumor, but only an Avian Vet will be able to determine that. There are several different types of tumors, fatty tumors, kidneys, thyroid, adrenal tumors these are just a few. Some tumors can go into remission just like cancer does for humans. Your vet will run tests to make sure if it is a tumor or do an x-ray as many will show up this way. www.cockatiel.com/lumps.html Good luck.

sadly he isnt too tame anymore. he used to not mind wandering about or sitting on your finger but since i went to uni he has turned a bit grumpy! very protective of his cage. I am working with him everyday, chatting to him with his cage door open...i have gotten him to come down and chat back (and put his bell on his head!) but thats as far as he goes at the moment

My Chirpy loves to put her head under her bells. Going through some major changes at his age is difficult and that is probably why he became anti social when you left. I don't have any experiences with an old Cockatiel such as Louie so I don't have any advise more advise for you other then to keep on working with him.

ah thanks yeah, he is getting there slowly. he has always been a bit grumpy, only coming out of his cage for a little while and then going straight back in to sit in his favourite spot! lol he loves sitting with his bell on his head and squawking at me until i say "oh lou, what are you doing?" then he bashes the bell about! still life in the old bird!
