Hi I need some help. Our beloved cockatiel flew away in august, and amazingly, we found her a month later. Although she checked out at the vet as being in good health, she is obviously traumatized.....she will not let us get near her, bites, hisses and desperately tries to get away. We won't give up on her, but we were hoping someone out there had some specific strategies to try and get her to regain trust. At this time (we've only had her back for 2 weeks), she will not accept food from us, let us touch her, or be near us in the cage. The progress she HAS made, is to be in the cage in the living room.....and if we can catch her, she will sit on our finger (as long as we don't touch her). We'd appreciate any advice!

You will regain her trust, it will take a while and some patience. Let her get used to the environment again and then work from there.

When I got my 'tiel (when she was very young) she wouldn't eat or drink. She was not hand-fed so she wasn't tame at all. I had seen her interacting with her cagemates and she woulld go up to them and bend her head down asking to be preened. If the 'tiel of her choice refused she would practically stomp her feet in frustration. So I made the universal person to 'tiel gesture for "want a head scratch?" and she's been my best buddy ever since. Maybe if you tried a familiar gesture? (tho' you probably already have...)
