I am going to need a nest box in a few days. Like all teens they are practicing. But he will get it right sooner or later. I think the box should be about 12" x 12" & 10" high. Is this right? Never breed tiels before, but have plenty of chickens, once they start just let them go? Only going to breed until each grand child has 2 birds each. Hopefully, they will each get the same sex birds, we (I) don't want to become a breeder.

John if you read my pm the second episode of parrothut podcasts talks about raising baby birds. www.cockatielcottage.net/breeding.htmlThey should not be allowed to have babies of their own until they are one year old. Younger birds lack the necessary skills for parenting. Also female Cockatiels lay around 6 eggs, so you will be taking care of six baby Tiel's and they lay more then one clutch during their lifetime. Every summer is breeding time for birds.

Cockatiels should not be left to breed freely. It is too hard on the hen's body if she produces continuously. They should definately be split up and be given some R&R betweeen clutches.
A 12x12x10 is ok for a nest box.
Best of Luck!
