hi, i'm a new bird/cockatiel owner...her name is georgia!
from what i know she is about 5-6yrs old. she was part of a mated pair and continued to lay eggs after her mate died (maybe a year ago now?). she was living in an active environment but didn't receive any special one on one attention, so....she is a nervous bird and doesn't want to be touched although...she loves to be in the center of the action.
well my home is not so action filled. her cage is near where i spend a lot of time and so she's rarely alone. she has a good sized caged and i think it's set up well for her now (i made some changes).
my problem is getting her to trust me and be comfortable enough to step up on my hand...she runs away now (and did this where she was before). this, in spite of wanting to be in the center of the action. i'm willing to give her a lot of one on one time and we have been doing that. i did clip her wings so she could be out of the cage and she really seems to love that. she especially loves hanging on the sofa with me and my chinese crested hairless dog, zoey....although the dog would rather she wasn't around and sometimes leaves when georgia comes out of the cage. i think it's the wing flapping that bothers zoey.
i was wondering about a heated perch i was reading about...i worry about her staying warm here and catching drafts. any advice or experience with heated perches and other techniques for keeping them safe from chills and drafts.

Welcome to the boards
Don't know about heated perches
Cockatiels come from the Australia Desert and can tolerate weather changes.

No need for a heated perch. Also don't have to worry about drafts unless going from one extreme temperature to another suddenly. Jan
