Hello Folks... I recently adopted 2 tiels ( male & female - 8 yrs old ) They came from up north alaska to south east alaska by alaska airlines . The lady I got them from came down with Alzheimer's, they are needing alot of care . The female almost died due to the long flight on the jet , the male is fine . What I'm thinking is that they both have giardia , she has it way worse then he does . She dont have no tail feathers , and alot of feathers are missing all over her chest . She crys when she picks at them , plus she bleeds a bit . I keep calling down to Ketchikan at the vets down there , and they want me to fly them there . But , I think if I do , its gonna make the female way worse , as far as beings already stressed out , cause when I got them , she could hardly perch with out falling down ( which she did a few times ) . I bought a $100.00's worth of Nekton vitamins , feed them fesh veggies and snacks.... Could someone help me on getting rid of giardia ? I dont want them to die.. they deserve a 2nd chance.. please help me help them...  |

I'm sorry for your troubles and I would say DEFINITELY do NOT fly a sick bird anywhere....that, IMO, is ridiculous. If you think they have giardia, you need to treat them with meds known to fight giardia...and that is metronidazole. Check with pigeon supply places. You treat at your own risk (and that of the bird). Personally, I'd be getting them on some probiotics (I like aviculture) and whole apple cider vinegar (given on different days) until you can get proper meds to treat them, and I use probiotics at least once a week on my birds and ACV once a week or so as well.
Sick birds are hard and I always get a sick bird in a homemade brooder w/ heat, lots of millet and some low perches.
It also could be possible that the bird has something totally different and I've even had perfectly heathy birds who will get scared, fall to the bottom of the cage, and break off tailfeathers...but they DO NOT cry and pick their chest...that to me says it is something more than not being very graceful as some of mine are.
Good luck. You could contact an avian specialist vet, even out of state, you may have to pay for a consult but it may be worth it if you want to save these birds. With sick birds, time is always of the essence.

According to some bird health reading material in my library the symptoms of a Cockatiel with giardiasis are:
Persistent feather picking-especially of wings, flanks, and legs-often accompanied by screaming, as if the bird was in pain.
Wasting of the breast muscles
Dry, Flaky skin
Patchy feather loss
Loss of appetite
Shifting of leg lameness
Bleeding due to self-trauma, particularly during the molting season when blood feathers maybe involved.

Dimetridazole

Also, having a fresh stool sample examined by a vet, even one who does not specialize in birds, is a good place to start, IMO.

The protozoa may or may not be shed at the time the sample is taken. I have used a Vetafarm product with success.
The misssing tail feathers may be from the mate wanting to pick on the hen for breeding and she may not feel like it. I would separate them and put the cages side by side. The weakness could have been from a shortage of food or water prior to or on the trip, or it could be from other health issues as well. Poor feathering could be an old age issue as well.

The stress of flying and a new environment could have lead the hen to feather picking.
Also they could have been neglected when the lady came down with alzheimers, which may explain the weakness as they may have developed some health issues.
