Our cockatiels have hatched 2 eggs, and they were both helping to feed and care for the hatchlings. But today we had a terrible accident--while we were trying to clean the cage, Daddy Tiel came out of the cage, and our dog tried to catch him. The poor bird died as we were rushing it to the vet. Can the mother bird care for the babies now on her own? Are there special nutrients that we should be giving her to help maintain her strength? Thank you for any advice you can give--we are so upset.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. The mother can care for the babies on her own. Be sure she is getting plenty of food for the babies and loads of water. Feeding her some soft foods will help as well. I feed my parent birds brown rice, scrambled eggs, etc. in addition to cockatiel seed blend and Zupreme natural pellets. Just in case the hen finds raising babies alone to be overwhelming, I suggest you purchase some handfeeding formula and some 10 or 12 cc feeding syringes. Find a local cockatiel breeder who can instruct you on handfeeding babies. Your avian vet should also be able to help. If not, contact one of the National Cockatiel Society State or Regional Coordinators. Let us know how things are coming along!
