Ok, so today my husband and I were coming home from picking up our daughter at day care and as we entered our house a cockatiel flew into the house. He/She is very friendly and came to use like it had known us forever. My husband decided that we would keep it if the owner didn't put out poster and look for it. So we went to the pet store tonight and bought a cage, food, toy, etc, etc. I have NO idea how to care for a bird. My main concern is that we do not have air conditioning in our house (except our bedrooms, we live in NYC) and that the house is too hot for the bird. Can anyone shed some light on what temperatures birds can withstand? I'm going to put "Lucky" in a room with a ceiling fan and an additional floor fan to keep him cool until the owner "claims" him or we keep him ourselves. Can anyone help me out here?

Sounds like you caught a hungry and thirsty pet that got away from its owner. Check with your local police and fire departments to see if someone lost their bird. Also check your newspapers. Cockatiels can tolerate above freezing to quite hot. Make sure Lucky is not out of its cage when the ceiling fan is running. They tend to want to ride up there--which can result in a very unsafe condition. Provide a good cockatiel seed mix and plenty of fresh water daily. Offer fresh green daily such as broccoli and other fresh vegetables. You can also offer pellets. Beware of aerosol products such as hairspray and some cleaning products. Mine do not have airconditioning and they tolerate the heat better than I do. Let me know if you have additional question. Jan

We have no air conditioning in the house and My Cockatiel had no problems during the 100 degree weather we had two weeks ago. Cockatiel's come from the Australian desert so they can handle heat pretty well.

did you find the owner or keep him? How are you handling the bird if you did keep him?

I just wanted to add one thing that many of the others missed. I know that you are getting attached to Lucky, but if it were me I would not just wait till its owner calls and claims him/her, I would go out and actively try finding them. Some little kid is probably beside themselves crying their eyes out because their poor pet escaped. If you love the bird enough that you are willing to help make it comfortable and well adjusted and loved while in your care, then you should also know that whomever lost him/her does too. Noone will know you have the bird unless you advertise that you do, and there is no way for the owner to find them if they keep missing the check ins wherever you do go. I wish you the best with your new found friend, but I also hope that its owner is found, blessings Ruth

I totally agree with Ruth --- 100% -- I have lost birds in the past and I wish the person that had him would at least make an effort to have found me --
