My single female cockatiel has laid 17 eggs since mid-May. I've tried all sorts of things to get her to "snap out" of thinking it's breeding season, but to no avail. She seems to be maintaining her strength - eats a pellet diet supplimented with fruits, veggies and cheese/shrimp tails (for calcium). But I am worried she's going to seriously compromise herself with this chronic egg-laying. The vet just said to leave the eggs in her cage - which I do. Short of getting a hormone shot, what else should I do?

Like the vet said, let her sit with her eggs. The usual sitting time is three weeks, but let her sit longer on them. Since there is no male, the eggs will not be fertile and they will usually dry up inside the longer she sits on them. My experience with hormone shots is that they don't work to stop the laying. Jan

My female has laid over 150 eggs in the last 5 years. Purely on a hunch I cut her wing feathers a little shorter than normal. She did not lay any eggs till the feathers were all back. Discussed with vet and the summation, though hypothetical was a channeling of hormones to the wings which slowed down her egg laying.

You could try using fake tiel eggs to stop the egg laying. One the board members here sells fake Cockatiel eggs that look and feel like real eggs. I ordered some eggs from her and they just arrived. I will try them within the next two weeks and will post the results.
