My tiel seems to be gasping for breath and he seems to shake a little. other than that, he seems to be OK. we're both fairly old and and live in Las Vegas...hot, hot hot. Can they take the heat? Chuck

Hello Chuck, sorry no-one else has answered this yet, but let me give it a shot. Cockatiels originated in Austrailia in the dessert regions, so yes they can handle the heat. However, due to his age, he may be having some difficulties from that. The "gasping" you speak of, sounds like he is panting. If you have a spritz bottle, fill it with water and spray a light mist into the air above him. it will not only help cool him off but also assist him in preening. Please be sure that there are no air conditioners or fans running while he is wet though. Because birds have hollow bones, once they get a chill, it is harder for them to warm up. Blessings Ruth

If he is panting, then he is trying to cool down. A good swamp cooler in your region will go a long way for you and your cockatiel. The dramatic change in temperature is tough for him. Could perhaps a friend take him in (and you too!)
