I just got my tiel a little over a week ago and I've never had one before. We cover him overnight, and on weekend mornings when we uncover him he will scream for about 2 hours or so and climb all over the cage. After that he's quiet for the rest of the day. I live in an apartment building and I'm quite concerned about the noise level this is creating. We're assuming that he also does this during the week when we're at work, but we're not sure. Is this normal? Is there any way to calm him down?

I'm not an expert or anything. I have a 3 year old cockatiel, a male named Bob. First thing in the morning he likes to be very vocal. Since I taught him to talk and sing he tends to do that. He'll screech when I leave the room because he wants the attention and also wants to know where I am. I'm guessing your cockatiel just feels good when he wakes up and wants everyone to know! I've learned from other 'tiel owners not to give in and respond to the screeching. It just makes them learn to do it more. I live in an apartment complex too. When I got Bob I just went around to the neighboring apartments and told them I just got a new bird and to let me know if the noise becomes a problem. I think they were just glad to know that I cared about them. I haven't had any complaints. I also know that after a couple of hours of noise Bob will settle down and sleep the rest of the day while I'm at work. I'm betting other people here will say that the noise is normal for the start of the day. I'm hoping your new bird will settle down into his new home and be the wonderful companion my bird is to me. Hang in there!

Becca,
Vocalizing is the way birds let their owners know how they feel. I have 16 cockatiels and first thing in the morning they are usually very noisy especially when I leave the room. I agree with the suggestion of letting your neighbors know that you have a bird nd would like to know if he makes to much noise for them to deal with, that way you can try to ensure that he doeesn't scream more than absolutely necessary. Also, you might want to leave a radio on since cockatiels are very social and that sometimes will help reduce their screeching or vocalizations.

You definitely don't want to reinforce it by giving him a lot of attention when he screams. I used to ignore the screams and when they quieted down, I would then go over and talk to them cheerfully and in a quiet voice. I also taught them several whistles and words and they seem to use those sounds in the morning and evening instead of screaming - except when they want their morning toast and evening snack!

Hi everyone I'm the newest member and I would like to introduce myself. My name is Yvonne(Star) I live in Marysville,CA Northern part of the state close to the Capital Sacramento. I've had several cockatiels in my life time and I have fallen in love with this bird. The cockatiel I have now is now almost 1 yr. old, his name is Peppy because he is so sprie always on the go. He likes to give love bites,he does this everywhere but on my mouth. Sometimes he gets alittle carried away and starts biting harder and it hurts. Can anybody tell me why he might do this? Is he aware that it hurts? We get along most of the time. I've taught him several tricks. He loves peanuts, he goes around in a tight circle right or left. On command I'll say round round or I signal with my finger one way or the other. He also climbs latter to the top and backwards to the bottom. He is very smart. He needs constant attention. A real show off. Will he grow out of this? I'm really happy to have found this site. Its GREAT!!! ;D

I don't know why she does it, but as long as it does not hurt or draw blood, she can nip to her hearts delight. Cockatiels use their beaks to explore, that might be the reason as to why they bite us while playing. Cockatiels need lots of attention. They are flock birds and we are their human flock, so no he will not outgrow this.
