Hi both my birds have their wings trimmed by the woman we adopted them from 2 months ago. I would like to keep the wings trimmed to limit their flight. I have noticed their tail feathers are broken and getting fewer. Is this because of the trimmed feathers? What are the blood feathers I am reading about? I am so unsure and worried about doing something wrong. Thanks

I have a hen that if I clip her wings, she is continually breaking her tail feathers because she was unbalanced when she would try to fly. She would try to fly and would end up flipping herself over and breaking her tail feathers at the follicle and it left a stub (which didn't allow other tail feathers to grow in), I called her Gigi, the tailless wonder. Usually when a bird molts, these stubs will fall out, but in Gigi's case they didn't. My mentor in cockatiels came over and actually pulled all of the stubs and she grew new tail feathers. If you have someone who is experienced in cockatiels you can have them come over and do it for you, if not, you need to take to an avian vet.
As for blood feathers, it a a new normal feather that is growing from a follicle in a bird's skin. Birds have blood feathers always growing in and there is one growing in for each and every single feather that is molted out. Blood feathers contain an artery and a vein with a circulating supply of blood running through the quill. When a blood feather is broken, the bird can bleed profusely and die. Because of this, the feather needs to be completed pulled from the skin to stop the bleeding. When the feather is completely removed it allows the follicle to close up on its own and the bleeding will stop. Again, you need to be experienced if you are trying to remove a blood feather because if you don't get it completely out of the follicle it can continue to bleed. Check to see if there are any Cockatiel or Parrot clubs or a breeder (with a good reputation) near you for some assistance with blood feathers.
Hope to see you visit the site often. When you do, please tell us a little more about your birds and your experience with birds.

Thank you, I took her to the vet and he pulled the stubs. He also suggested leaving two flight feathers on both wings. If she had too much lift in flight to clip one more. and so far the tail feathers are coming back and not broken. I posted a picture of both my sweet hearts.
