Unless you have a very vocal female. My Lucy did not read the manual on the difference of sexes in Cockatiels, nor did her mate Desi. Desi is very quiet and Luci whistles and talks - ALL day long. She even does the male mating calls, but she lays eggs. There are several ways to tell a male and a female apart, all of which take practice and only one way is close to predicting 100% accurately. In a normal grey for example, the males will generally have a bright yellow face and the females have almost no yellow. This is not true in most of the other varieties. The second way to tell is by gently and carefully checking the pelvic area. Males and females have a slightly different shape. This takes practice to learn and is not 100% accurate (although some folks are really really good at it!). The third way, and most accurate in prediction, is to do a DNA test. The test uses 5 or 6 feathers (or if you are testing babies, you can send off the eggshell) sent off to the company along with a fee (about $29). Within a few days, they can tell you the sex of your bird. Finally, the only 100% accurate way to tell? If your bird lays eggs, its a female. (hehe) Michelle
