Hello, We own a cocketiel who entered our lives when my 23 year old daughter was 14. We believe she is a girl, though never had a blood test done to find out for sure! She never "talked" as much as some i have heard and her patches are not terribly bright, so that is all we've had to go by. My daughter named her Polly 8-9 years ago, and we love her dearly. She has seen so much of our lives from her vantage point in her big cage in our kitchen and has always announced when one of us is returning home in the driveway, as she can see out the window. Unfortunately, as our house was renovated shortly after we got her, many doors were removed from rooms and, since we also have always had two cats and two dogs, I stopped feeling comfortable allowing her to sit outside of her cage. The vet had pointed out what good flyers tiels are, unless their wings are clipped frequently, and I have never wanted to risk one of the other pets chasing her. Her cage is fairly large and she has had enough activity with my famlly of 5 around her, that I have had to rationalize that between her toys and us, she is entertained over the years without being out. This fall, we are in a situation which may require us to move her to a different location, and I will post my question about this in a different thread. For now, it's nice to have found this group and I am looking forward to what I read from others who also love these beautiful smart birds!

There's so much great help here. It's wonderful. A bird is just like a puppy - work at training them from the start and you'll have a friend for life.
Since this was jimdragontech's post I'll agree with marieandchirpy, you must have a nosy household ;-)
