I am so glad to have found you. I have learned alot reading all the informative questions and answers. I have a total of 20 birds, 14 tiels and 6 keets. They have all been of rescued situations. All of my original birds are banded. The last 7 tiels I rescued are not. I answered an add on Craigs list that said they were moving and could not care for the birds. There were some "White faced" and my curiosity got the best of me. When I saw them, something didn't seem right. 2 were pluckers. One had plucked himself around his entire neck and the other on his chest. My gut told me not to take them but my heart said not to leave them there, My heart won....When I questioned the owner he said that they were frustrated because he had not allowed them to breed. Any thoughts? What should I do about the band issue?

Birds do pluck. around the neck and chest are very common "sexual" places to pluck when you have birds housed with opposite sex birds. It is very common to also have cheek spots plucked, crests plucked, etc. You can try sorting birds by sex and you can also give them extra "preening" toys. A good health checkup should also be in order to rule out any underlying health conditions. My thoughts would be its not health related but there are illnesses that can cause birds to pluck. Just my opinion. Leslie

Sometimes birds will pluck due to a shortage of food, or a lack of vitamins and mineral they need. Offer lots of fresh greens and they will be busy eating, not plucking. Jan
