I have two male cockatiels in a large cage. I put a cereal box that I have folded so it's like a tunnel on the bottom of the cage. They either shred it up or sit in it quietly for hours. The chewing I understand but what the heck are they doing when they sit in it???

They more than likely aren't doing anything other than getting away, similar to how we humans with sometimes go to our rooms to avoid people, sounds, etc. As long as they seem happy I won't bother with removing the box.

If you could post a picture it might help me make a better verdict, but are you sure they aren't new tail feathers growing in?

If they are hiding in the cereal box they are trying to make a nest. Chewing is part of the process also. Jan
